The power of movie music is often overlooked...
The Sound of Music film is one that many people in the English speaking world will know from their childhood. This chirpy and overly sweet film was loaded with music and became iconic. Released in 1965, the Sound of Music film showed an Austrian novice nun who was recruited as a governess to a widower's seven children. The Sound of Music film depicted her gentle efforts at controlling the tear aways and not allowing them to push her away as had happened to the previous governesses.
The Sound of Music film had approximately twenty different pieces of music worked throughout the film, and while other musicals have had similar amounts, few are as well known as those from the Sound of Music film.
More recent movies too have become known for their wonderful music-including such lesser known (for their music) movies such as Transformers. Released in 2007, this movie about robots who can transform into another form-a battle between good (the Transformers) and bad (the Decepticons), was a huge hit, making Transformers sound effects once again well known and including many modern songs which became instant hits thanks to the movie.
In addition to the music in the movie, Transformers sound effects from both the movie and the earlier TV show were unique. It might not have had the same saccharine sweetness as the Sound of Music film did, but Transformers sound effects had a big impact when it was released, with many people rushing to buy the sound track.
One of the best known of the Transformers sound effects would be the transformation sound effect. This wooshing sound, increasing in tone was unique to the Transformers set of sound effects, and accompanied a change from one for to another.
Napoleon Dynamite sounds, when the film was released in 2004 were hugely low budget compared to Transformers sound effects. With a total budget for the film of just $400,000, Napoleon Dynamite sounds included such older music tracks as The Rose by Bette Midler, and Time After Time by Cindy Lauper, and music from lesser known groups of composers instead of more modern tracks. This left the Napoleon Dynamite sounds far more campy than other movies released around the same time, but to huge success with its audience.
Of current TV shows, perhaps one of the largest sets of sound effects would be that of the controversial Howard Stern show. Howard Stern sound effects include many short sound bites, each used at an appropriate or amusing time, such as 'excuse me!', 'Yo Howard!' and others that became associated with him.
Similar sound effects are of course available from free, or low cost, royalty free web sites. These sites are licensed to distribute these sound clips or complete tracks legally, and without risk to the final user-yourself. Free movie sound effects can be included in your production as you choose to use them, where ever they are appropriate. Such clips include trains, helicopters, Jet Plane and many other effects.
